““But if it is by the finger of God that I drive out demons, then the Kingdom of God has come upon you”.”
There is a story in The Bible about Jesus Christ casting out a demon from a man who was mute. Astonished as the people were with His ability, some were skeptical. How did He do it? Where does His power come from? Perhaps it is from some sinister source. There are those who cannot accept the success of others, and so they rationalize (or irrationalize) that something illegal or unlawful has happened. They fail to see the fact that they are witnessing greatness.
With the advent of social media, one can expect the proliferation of unfounded speculation among those who reach the top. A quick scroll on these websites will show that when one posts a remarkable accomplishment, what follows is not just accolades but mistaken accusations of cheating, dishonesty, or deception. For the uninitiated, this can dampen emotions and lower the morale of individuals who poured their heart and soul into accomplishing something. The discouragement then leads to a lack of desire to do even more in the future, as it is deemed unrewarding to aim for greatness.
When taking care of patients in the clinics, most physicians follow a general rule of thumb as dictated by empirical evidence. There are those, however, who do not trust the process because it does not benefit them – doctors, paramedical personnel, or even relatives of the patient who want to push a different agenda. I have to admit that there are moments when I needed to step back and rethink medical decisions particularly when I encounter stiff opposition from what I personally believe in. Some of these situations may involve the use of medications for pain, or the desire to stop treatment that is no longer beneficial such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy. This is difficult because it could undermine your confidence in taking decisive action in the future.
The key to this is to acknowledge this feeling of discouragement. Step back at first, then move forward. A quick conversation with a colleague helps to regain one’s footing, for it gives a new perspective on the resolution of the problem. Reflecting on your past success also reminds you that you have the talent, skill, and expertise to make the correct assessment. Since nothing good comes out of negativity, one needs to be in a positive environment that fosters camaraderie and teamwork. Control your feelings, and seek professional help if needed.
Remember your purpose and your core beliefs when your authority or expertise is challenged. As Christ never wavered in his belief and desire to cast out demons, even if others were skeptical, so must be also have the trust and confidence in our desire to do what is best. It is a given that people will have dissenting opinions and points of view. With proper communication and assertiveness, you can emphasize points to support your decision without being disagreeable, despite the harsh criticism of others.
Just recently we saw how belief in a goal in the face of criticism can do wonders. Rising tennis star Alex Eala recently defeated at least three higher-ranked players and champions, never deserved a second look. The betting odds showed her as an overwhelming underdog, but she still won. When asked how she so calmly exhibited confidence in front of opposition, she mentioned that she was brought up that way—to believe, to work hard, and to trust herself. She never threw temper tantrums. She was unruffled even when an umpire questioned her during the match. Everybody thought she was going to lose, except her, and she executed her game plan to perfection.
Trust your talent, your skills, and believe that the stars will align to support your good deeds. No matter what the cost. No matter what the noise is around you. No matter what the betting odds are, keep the faith. For when the time is right, the Kingdom of God will come upon you and uplift your efforts.
