I. Rationale

At a time when healthcare resources and hospitals are under great pressure, and the unyielding wall of our frontline health care workers is under daily hammering, the treatment of those patients with refractory illness becomes even more complex.

The primary care provider or attending team faces the added responsibility of difficult decision-making. Constant critical care communication to a patient diagnosed with CoViD-19 and those close to them is found to be even more necessary, but is difficult to perform. And, in our country, rendering a prognosis and a follow through with a palliative plan of care is becoming a demand.

This is where we, as palliative care providers and ELNEC trainers, can help support fellow health care workers to relieve these substantial concerns. This is where this ELNEC webinar series, culturally contextualized and CoViD-19 integrated, can become of vital support.

The fundamentals of this webinar series are based from the internationally accepted End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC), a joint training program between the City of Hope Medical Center and the American Association of the Colleges of Nursing.

Contents of the course include an overview of CoViD-19, discussions on the physiological, psychosocial, cultural and spiritual needs of the patients and their families, communication processes between patients, families and health care providers, and ethical issues that are commonly encountered when caring for a dying patient. Additional information on professional challenges such as compassion fatigue and caring for self are also included.

This serves as a pandemic-integrated training of nurses in critical palliative and hospice care, conducted as part of the Leadership for H.O.P.E (Hospice Opportunity for Patient Empowerment) Educational Program of The Ruth Foundation.
